Angelina Jolie is making a plea for more help for the victims of Pakistan’s floods, which have devastated much of the country. The UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador is appealing for greater public support for efforts to provide humanitarian relief to the millions of people whose lives have been dramatically altered by the massive natural disaster. “One-fifth of Pakistan is under water and the threat of disease now looms for 20 million affected people,” says Angelina. “This is not just a humanitarian crisis; it is an economic and social catastrophe. UNHCR is on the ground. The more support we can give, the greater number of tents, food, clean water, and medicine will get to the people in need.” Angelina has made three visits to Pakistan since 2001, when she became a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, and donated $100,000 at the outbreak of the current crisis. UNHCR teams are currently working to provide shelter and other emergency supplies to hundreds of thousands of people caught up in the disaster, but the needs of the victims are outpacing the ability of humanitarian organizations to help. Last week the UN refugee agency revised its global appeal for the Pakistan flood operation to $120 million from $41 million.
